Green or Green, Red or Red, Why Oh Why?

Here is a quick wonder out loud for you. A great many Dinky cars and similar have passed through my hands and I have noticed color variations and differences that have always puzzled me. Even models that should be identical can show surprising color differences.

The Mystery of Color Variations

One of the most intriguing aspects of collecting vintage diecast models is discovering that supposedly identical models can have noticeably different colors. You might have two Dinky Toys of the same model number, supposedly the same car, but one is a bright red while the other is more of a maroon or burgundy.

Possible Explanations

Manufacturing Batches

Different production runs often used slightly different paint formulations. Paint suppliers might change, or the same supplier might adjust their formula slightly between batches.

Aging and Fading

UV exposure, heat, and time can cause paint to fade or shift color. Red paints are particularly susceptible to fading, often becoming more orange or pink over time.

Regional Variations

Models sold in different countries sometimes featured different colors to appeal to local markets or comply with regional preferences.

Paint Technology Evolution

As paint technology improved over the years, manufacturers switched to new formulations that might produce slightly different shades.

What This Means for Collectors

These variations make collecting even more interesting! Some color variations are rare and highly sought after, while others might indicate a model has been repainted or restored. Understanding these differences helps collectors make informed decisions and appreciate the complexity of vintage manufacturing.

Next time you see two "identical" models with different colors, don't assume one is wrong โ€“ you might be looking at fascinating examples of manufacturing history!

This is so interesting! I never realized there were so many factors affecting color variations. I have two identical Dinky models that are completely different shades of blue.
